Purdue recently welcomed a new housing development, 3rd & West, to their campus. The development creates a modern, safe, and connected environment that empowers students to thrive academically and socially while living away from home. PLANNET partnered with ACC (American Campus Communities) and SCB (Solomon Cordwell Buenz) to deliver a seamless technology experience that integrates communication, security, and entertainment to enhance daily life for residents.

The overall development consists of a multi-story building totaling approximately 303,000 SF. In total, the project features over 400 residential units and 627 beds across 246,150 SF of residential space. Additionally, the facility features a 6,630 SF community center, 1,180 SF of leasing offices, and 1,970 SF of facilities space. Together, these areas were designed to foster community engagement while supporting students’ academic success.

PLANNET’s scope of work included the design and oversight of telecommunications, audiovisual, and physical security systems. The audiovisual systems were specifically selected to promote collaboration, relaxation, and entertainment across shared spaces, integrating features such as background music, gaming systems, study rooms, social lounges, and fitness areas. These AV solutions create flexible environments where residents can focus on coursework, unwind with peers, or enjoy community activities.

On the security side, PLANNET designed an integrated access control and video surveillance system, ensuring that residents feel safe throughout the property. By limiting access to amenity and residential areas exclusively to residents, the system promotes both comfort and peace of mind.

The project presented unique challenges, having been designed during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that required virtual coordination among team members. These early adaptations helped establish video conferencing workflows that remain standard in design collaboration today. When construction finally resumed, updates were made to the access control platforms, and PLANNET successfully revised all drawings and specifications within weeks, delivering ahead of schedule.

Ultimately, the technology systems designed by PLANNET enrich the student living experience in meaningful ways. Reliable data and wireless connectivity allow residents to maintain close contact with family, collaborate with classmates, and engage in digital learning across the property. The AV systems create welcoming communal environments, while the integrated security measures ensure safety and comfort. Together, these systems form the foundation for a positive, connected, and forward-thinking residential community that supports students both academically and personally.
